How to Register

To obtain your own folder, user name and access privileges, please call or e-mail your representative. Requests made between 9am-4pm (Monday-Friday) will be fulfilled the same day. Please give your representative your e-mail address so we may also confirm user name and password via email. Secure folders and Registered User access are for the customers and employees of Brenneman Printing, Inc.

Note to Registered Users

As a registered user, you will have access to your own personal folder which will be secure from other users. When uploading a file, please notify your representative so they may activate your order/request. All files will be deleted after one month.

Accessing Site Using an FTP Application

The preferred method of accessing an FTP site is with an FTP application such as Transmit (Mac), CuteFTP (Windows), or WS ftp (Windows).

Simply enter the user name and password that you were given within the program's initial connection window and the host will be ftp.brenprint.com

***Please change the preferences to "passive mode transfers".

Accessing Site Using a Web Browser

Web browsers such as Internet Explorer or Netscape (any web browser) are no longer supported.

Preparing Files for Transfer

To help ensure a successful transfer we recommend compressing your file(s) using a program such as StuffIt® (Mac) or WinZip® (Windows). Compressed files are smaller, making transfers a bit faster and help reduce the chance of files becoming corrupted during transfer.

Finally, please name your files using standard naming conventions - where the minimal number of characters are used, no spaces or symbols are used, and a true three digit suffix denotes the file type - example: brochure.sea

Transferring Your File

Most newer programs support drag and drop (Mac or Windows). Upon login, your folder should be at the top of the directory. Drag your compressed file onto the window. When the progress bar is complete, you are done and may quit out of the program.

Steps to Creating a Clean Digital File

(Top)

Layout/Document Setup

  1. Make your file 1-up.
  2. Make electronic file the actual size of the finished document. If document bleeds, extend the bleed areas 1/8" beyond the document's finished size.
  3. Our maximum image area is 19 1/2 X 25 1/2 including bleeds.
  4. Keep file in Readers Spreads.
  5. Keep all live copy at least 1/8" from edge of page.
  6. Remove non-printing items from the pasteboard.
  7. Do not apply traps. We have specialized software that creates traps in your document.
  8. Provide the correct panel size for the style of fold you wish to incorporate.

Fonts

  1. Please be sure to send all fonts (printer and screen fonts) used in your document. Remember to include all fonts that have been used in linked art.
  2. Try to use Postscript fonts when possible, avoid using True Type fonts.
  3. When working on a MAC platform, NEVER style fonts using the tool bar.
  4. When working on a PC platform, if you are going to style fonts using the tool bar, make sure you have the printer font which matches the style you have chosen.
  5. Very small point sizes, especially small serif faces reversing out of tints, should be avoided. For fine serif type, try not to reverse smaller than 10 pt. Your job will print more clearly with sans serif reverses, as a rule.

Graphics/Supporting Files

  1. NEVER embed graphics in layout programs (always link the graphic file and send that linked file with the job).
  2. Always save graphic files as EPS or TIFF. (JPG, GIF, PICT, WMF, DSC files, Scitex CT, are not acceptable). Additionally, do not save TIFF files with alpha channels.
  3. Images should be saved as one of the following:
    - CMYK
    - Bitmap
    - Grayscale
    - Monotone
    - Duotone
    RGB files not acceptable
  4. Preferred Resolutions
    - Any Raster Art with type and/or fine detail should be 1200 dpi placed at 100%.
    - All other Raster Art, such as photos, should be 300 dpi placed at 100%.
    - Vector Art, such as Freehand or Illustrator files, does not have a resolution.
  5. Rotate, scale and crop images before placing them on your page layout program. By completing these steps, you will avoid RIP problems and save imaging time and money.

Color Creation

  1. Delete all unused colors from files.
  2. Make sure all images are defined in CMYK format or PMS (Pantone) equivalent.
  3. Remember that your monitor may not be color calibrated, so select colors using a Pantone Swatch Book as opposed to the way they appear on your monitor.
  4. If your job is printing as a Spot Color job, make sure you use only the Spot Colors that are to be printed (printing separations is a good way to double check the colors that will print).
  5. Remember, Pantone colors which have been converted to CMYK are not an exact match. Refer to a Solid to Process Pantone book for a visual representation of the process color.
  6. When submitting a spot color job, make sure your spot colors are named the same in supporting files as in the page layout program.

Rules & Screens

  1. Try not to use rules below 1/2 point.
  2. We recommend not using less than a 5% screen.
  3. Avoid saving screening information of transfer functions with Adobe Photoshop images.

File Naming

  1. Name your file something recognizable; ex., xyz brochure.
  2. Never use special characters (i.e., %, &, *) only use dash and underscore
  3. Never use periods in the actual file names, periods should only be followed by an extension. (i.e. file.tif is correct, file.1.new.tif, is incorrect.)

Hard Copy

  1. ALWAYS send accurate hard copy (backed up and folded).
  2. If possible, send hard copy at actual size.

Sending File/Preferred Mediums

When emailing always use some form of compression software (Stuffit or WinZip) to avoid corruption of your file.

When copying to a disk, please send only the files needed for that job so there is no question as to which files to use.

Acrobat Distiller Settings

(Top)

Below you'll find screen shots from Acrobat Distiller 6.0 with the settings that work best with our Imagesetters. You can download the PC or Mac Job Option files here. (Mac) | (Windows)

After downloading, place inside the "settings" folder (Adobe Acrobat/Distiller/Settings). Relaunch Distiller if you already have it open for changes to take effect. BPI-HiRes should now be a selectable job option.
